Yes i am concerned but i dont think there is much we can do to reverse this. Part of the problem is that this is not entirely our fault. We are in between ice ages. What we are seeign now is a period of global warming which is always accompanied by a new ice age. This is a natural cycle that has been going on long before mankind was around. The period of global warming will probably go on for at least a hundred years or so before nature plunges us into an ice age. How does that happen? Easy. The Artic ice cap melts, freshwater in large quantities does not react well with saltwater. Eventually the Atlantic conveyor belt will come to a standstill and Northern Europe and North America will plunge into an ice age. I know the Day After Tomorrow was only a movie, but it does give a rough idea behind the science!
Having said that, we humans should and must bear responsibility as well. And this dates back not to the last few decades. You have to look at the Industrial Revolution back in the 1800s. We have been churning out massive quantities of C02 ever since. Awareness of the environmental implications of this has been known since the 1960s really but only became mainstream/mass awareness in the 1980s. However even when we became aware we still go chopping down rainforests and use petrol driven cars. That is so very wrong. We do not own the planet. We share it. With other animals and wildlife. And what legacy will we leave future generations? I dread to think. it is bad enough that we still fight wars and still have nuclear weapons which will destroy the world many times over. Actually the Earth will be blown to smithereens and all that will be left of the planet is an asteroid belt of rocks and rubble that used to be Planet Earth. I used to have terrible nightmares about that when i was growing up. But that's another story.
Getting back to the environment i think the clock is running out of time. Our planet is slowly dying. I think we who are living now are seeing the last of the environment being so diverse. I for one am glad i wont be around in another 100 years because the planet is going to be much worse off. Droughts, infertile land thanks to intense farming. Biodeiversity will be broken down. Even now the oceans are beginning to see fish stocks starting to dwindle which is not good news. The problem is that we cannot fix this. Unless we learn how to terraform a planet, but we are centuries away from that technology and by then it will be too late. So yes i do see a bleak future for our planet. for our home.
